From Flight Training to Faith: Soaring with Captain Terry Warner

Ever had your dreams grounded by something as simple as a headset? Join me, Captain Terry Warner, as I recount my journey from those early, clumsy days of flight training to finally soaring solo in the skies. Through a humorous lens, I share stories of engine troubles and the anxious jitters of navigating the taxiway. But what makes these tales more than just aviation anecdotes is the deeper connection to my spiritual voyage, illustrating how embracing faith can lead to greater heights and blessings. This episode is not just about learning to pilot an aircraft; it's about navigating life's challenges with resilience and belief.

On a different note, explore the comforting embrace of The Chaplain's Corner, where I extend a heartfelt invitation to be part of a community dedicated to uplifting messages and reflections. Each Monday, I aim to brighten your week by sharing insights that resonate with both your soul and spirit. 00:00:24.960 --> 00:00:34.273
Hello friend, captain Terry Warner, here this will be Season 4, episode 43, Learning to Fly.

00:00:34.273 --> 00:00:39.351
I decided back in 2002 to get my pilot's license.

00:00:39.351 --> 00:01:01.091
I'd been sort of flying with my stepson and having a good time and enjoyed it and I decided to get my pilot's license and so I got to the airport and I get an introduction to the plane and the wings and the fuselage and walk around and checklist and everything else.

00:01:01.091 --> 00:01:09.887
The first hour is pretty intense because you're trying to learn everything and pay attention to what's going on.

00:01:09.887 --> 00:01:17.528
So we got everything checked out, got the checklist, got everything done pretty much got the questions answered.

00:01:17.528 --> 00:01:22.849
I won't go into detail on this, but it's sort of funny.

00:01:22.849 --> 00:01:27.290
I'm plugging my microphone in my headset in.

00:01:27.290 --> 00:01:32.451
If you don't plug it in all the way or plug it in the right slot.

00:01:32.451 --> 00:01:38.948
Now mine is fixed where you can't plug it in the wrong slot, but if you don't plug it in all the way, it goes dead.

00:01:38.948 --> 00:01:43.930
And I thought, oh, and I plugged it in and it was dead.

00:01:43.930 --> 00:01:56.531
And I thought to myself, oh, for crying out loud, first time I'm going to learn to fly, first airplane flight, and I get a microphone, a headset that doesn't work.

00:01:56.531 --> 00:02:07.605
Well, the instructor saw my dilemma and my facial expressions and reached over and shoved it the rest of the way in the plug hole and away we went.

00:02:09.448 --> 00:02:20.030
So the first thing we started doing was taxiing around the buildings and down the alleyways and stuff of the airfield, the ramps and stuff.

00:02:20.030 --> 00:02:24.604
And then we got ready to go take off on the first flight.

00:02:24.604 --> 00:02:26.651
And boy, I go through my pre-check list.

00:02:26.651 --> 00:02:33.131
I'm, I am pumped, I am ready to go, and down the runway we go.

00:02:33.131 --> 00:02:40.584
Now we were in a little tomahawk, that's a two-seater small plane and we were using all the runway.

00:02:40.584 --> 00:02:42.145
We had over 6,000 feet of runway and all the runway.

00:02:42.145 --> 00:02:50.973
We had over 6,000 feet of runway, plenty of runway, plenty of runway to take off and land several times, but anyway.

00:02:50.973 --> 00:03:05.521
So down the runway we go and I get up to my speed, I pull back a little bit and my instructor's coaxing me along and everything and we can't get up to speed to lift off.

00:03:05.521 --> 00:03:08.800
We just can't develop the airspeed.

00:03:08.800 --> 00:03:17.822
So my instructor I think we were probably maybe halfway down the runway said how are you on emergency procedures?

00:03:17.822 --> 00:03:22.781
And I said wasn't planning on an emergency the first time I flew.

00:03:22.781 --> 00:03:49.328
So we got a chuckle out of that and we backed the power off and turned and canceled the takeoff and turned back onto the ramp and taxied back to the hangar and they had been running the mixture too rich and the plugs fouled out and we had power and we had airplane, but we could not develop enough power to take off.

00:03:49.328 --> 00:03:56.268
So it sounds more serious than it was and it may have been because I had the throttle on rich.

00:03:56.268 --> 00:03:59.824
I teased them about it but they teased me back.

00:04:01.294 --> 00:04:23.396
So the next weekend, off we go and I take my first flight, first flight, and I'm nervous, of course, gripping the steering wheel and the yoke, the rudder, the yoke, and finally the instructor talks me into using my thumb and two fingers, three at the most.

00:04:23.396 --> 00:04:25.360
And that's how I controlled the plane.

00:04:25.360 --> 00:04:29.809
You don't need to manhandle it, you don't need to be rough with it.

00:04:29.809 --> 00:04:33.802
You don't need to be tough with it, you need to relax, just like driving a car.

00:04:33.802 --> 00:04:37.584
So I fairly much got to where I could do that.

00:04:37.584 --> 00:04:47.050
So my first lesson after the taxi lesson was climb, descent and turns.

00:04:47.050 --> 00:04:48.560
That's what we did the first hour.

00:04:48.560 --> 00:04:51.271
Came back in and turns that's what we did the first hour.

00:04:51.271 --> 00:04:51.754
Came back in and landed.

00:04:51.754 --> 00:04:54.764
That would have been in May 2002.

00:04:56.475 --> 00:05:03.862
In August of 2002, I soloed After 15.4 hours.

00:05:03.862 --> 00:05:12.101
I soloed and I thought I went out there the day before and I did three touch and goes.

00:05:12.101 --> 00:05:26.718
I went out there the day before and did 10 touch and goes and I thought to myself he's not going to let me solo, I'm going to just do touch and goes.

00:05:26.718 --> 00:05:27.860
Went out the next day and did six more touch and goes.

00:05:27.860 --> 00:05:32.379
I guess I was having trouble with the takeoffs and landings, mainly the landings.

00:05:32.379 --> 00:05:41.461
If you're not exactly on your numbers, right altitude, the right speed, it makes the landing sloppy.

00:05:41.461 --> 00:05:51.255
And so I finally got frustrated and said what have I got to do to get this thing to work, to get my landing down?

00:05:51.255 --> 00:06:13.899
And he said you got to get on those numbers, you got to get on your pattern altitude, you got to get your speed, you got to get on your glide slope, you got to get on your focal focus point, you've got to intentionally go down there with the intention of landing and doing it correctly and having the front wheel on the center line.

00:06:13.899 --> 00:06:25.737
Once I did that by golly it worked and it worked nice and it was a lot easier than trying to manhandle it and speed up and slow down and turn and this and that and everything else.

00:06:25.737 --> 00:06:27.781
So I got my solo.

00:06:27.781 --> 00:06:32.548
So I did turns and touch and goes.

00:06:32.548 --> 00:06:33.269
I soloed.

00:06:33.269 --> 00:06:37.380
I mean I'll give you an example One day I did.

00:06:37.380 --> 00:06:50.416
Well, over a period of a week I did 62 landings and takeoffs and landings and pretty soon I got to 300 and something.

00:06:50.456 --> 00:06:51.519
Takeoffs and landings.

00:06:51.519 --> 00:06:56.398
I got real good at that, probably better than flying, to be truthful.

00:06:56.398 --> 00:06:59.999
So how does I connect that with my Christian walk?

00:06:59.999 --> 00:07:03.439
Well, I got to reading the Bible.

00:07:03.439 --> 00:07:16.120
I gave my heart to Jesus Christ, got to reading the Bible, got interested, received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and you know, I probably just the Spirit in me just realized that.

00:07:16.120 --> 00:07:26.375
I made me realize that I probably turned some people off when I said that Folks, don't do your Christian life riding in a two-seater airplane.

00:07:27.639 --> 00:07:52.877
Move on up, get deeper in the things of the Lord, get more experience in the things of the Lord, because there's a whole treasure chest of blessings, prosperity, adventure when you get to know Jesus and start having fun with Him, when he quits being a religious object and starts being a friend, when he quits being God and starts being your big brother.

00:07:52.877 --> 00:07:56.557
I'm not trying to put God down or bring God down.

00:07:56.557 --> 00:08:01.095
As a matter of fact, I'm trying to get up, closer to Him, and he raised me up.

00:08:01.095 --> 00:08:04.860
He came down to my level when I couldn't get up to his.

00:08:04.860 --> 00:08:10.040
Don't say in your heart, bring Christ down or bring Christ up.

00:08:10.040 --> 00:08:14.019
Just say the words nigh you, what's it mean?

00:08:14.019 --> 00:08:22.098
The words inside me, it's in my mouth and it's in my mouth that it be in my heart and out of the abundance of the heart, my mouth speaks.

00:08:23.471 --> 00:08:32.750
I'll pick up on this next week and we'll go a little more, but why don't you this week just start like you're learning how to fly.

00:08:32.750 --> 00:08:44.342
Just start like you're learning how to be a new Christian and start reading the Bible as it was the first time and, if you're not born again, give your heart to Jesus Christ.

00:08:44.342 --> 00:08:46.235
Just say Jesus, come into my heart.

00:08:46.235 --> 00:08:55.940
I need help, my things are a mess, my life's a mess and I need to get turned around, especially before you return.

00:08:55.940 --> 00:09:03.037
You have a blessed day In Jesus' name and we'll see you next week.
